Kennebunkport – Maine, U.S.A. We celebrate our birthdays with travel. This year, for my 30th, we took a road trip to Kennebunkport.

I have nursed a fascination with Maine since grade school when I prepared a report on the state as a fourth grader, so now that we live less than three hours away, it was an obvious choice.

We set out from southwestern New Hampshire on a quiet summer morning, hit a little traffic on Interstate 95 once inside Maine, and arrived at the lovely Beach House Inn in the early afternoon.

For lunch, we took a friend’s recommendation and headed to Hurricane Restaurant on the banks of the Kennebunk River, just on the other side of the bridge as you enter the town. The mussels were the freshest and tastiest we’d ever had, and Misha’s entree–the rose fish and risotto–was excellent.

After biking along the coast, we dug into dinner and some birthday cake at Stripers Waterside Restaurant at the Breakwater Inn and Spa. The clam chowder there is awesome.

On our way home, we stopped by the Nubble Lighthouse in York.
