Friends laugh when they learn that we do not usually keep sugar in our cupboards–only a small jar of raw honey. Until the holidays, that is. At the end of the year, we buy white sugar and brown sugar and decorative sugar and molasses. And we bake pies and cookies and any other intriguing confections we’ve discovered in the pages of Bon Appétit and Southern Living over the last twelve months. It’s become a tradition, one of a few we’ve shaped over the years in our little family of two.
Perhaps it’s nostalgia for the gingerbread giants or the years growing up in Germany that leave me craving spice cookies during the holidays. But every December, I google Martha Stewart’s gingerbread recipe and bake cookies in my favorite shapes. This year, we’ve begun a project to bring the outdoors into our home for the holidays, and as if not yet fully immersed in Colorado and the mountains, I ordered a set of Rocky Mountain cookie cutters. They’re so much fun. A grizzly bear, moose, pine tree, bison, and pine tree–they add just the right amount of rustic flair to our standard holiday cutters.And our home is sweet and spicy and warm.
