Redland Agricultural Area, Miami – Florida, U.S.A. Every so often, someone posts a dazzling photo of a Miami-area sunflower field on Instagram or Flickr. Rarely, however, do they share exactly where the lovely blossoms grow or how to get there. So, this weekend, I determined to find my own field of floral dreams.

I had three possible locations, some deduced from vague details offered on the Web, and some more concrete, but likely dated. I was prepared to try all three, and because my primary motive was a little afternoon adventure, I was fine with what seemed to be slim odds for success.

SONY DSCI set out immediately after brunch heading to the Redland agricultural area just southwest of the city. I love driving into Redland. If the tourism and travel slogan for Miami is “That’s so Miami,” then the Redland slogan should be “That’s so not Miami.” As much as I love the city, it’s nice to get away from it all sometimes, and Redland feels far, far away. Not long after turning off of the main north-south highway — US Route 1 — the Miami suburbs give way to two-lane roads, farms and nurseries. And to quiet.

My first destination was, according to my research, somewhere near the intersection of SW 200th Street and 140th Avenue. When I passed SW 139th Avenue and saw not a hint of bright yellow petals, I readied myself for a u-turn. Then, to my right unfolded rows upon rows of sunflowers growing above a carpet of baby’s breath.

You can imagine how delightfully surprised I was. Would you believe it? Gold on the first try. I’d save the other two possible destinations for another weekend.

SONY DSCWith the mid-September sunshine diffused, but not weakened by the puffy gray clouds overhead, I scampered among the flowers like a chile, taking photos, and exchanging smiles and small talk with the owners who were tending weeds and selling flowers on the roadside. A perfect lazy Sunday afternoon. A field of sunflowers found.

If you’re interested, the other two destinations on my list of possible sunflower fields are:

  1. NW 97th Avenue and 33rd St
  2. 14700 SW 210th St

I’d love to hear if you find sunflowers at these two destinations or if you know of any other sunflower fields in the Miami area. Do share in the comments below.
