Sanibel and Captiva Islands – Florida, U.S.A.

Years ago, Sanibel and Captiva Islands were known for mosquitos. Today, they are known for beaches, seashells, and birds. Oh, and fishing, food, biking, and water sports too.

The two barrier islands–shaped more like a single crescent-shaped land mass– lie just offshore of Fort Myers on Florida’s Gulf Coast.

Njabulo and I went to watch the migratory birds in the J.N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge–the refuge is known around the world for its massive bird population, which peaks December through March–and to catch a sunset that never fully materialized, but was nice nonetheless.
